Doh, your comment system does not allow HTML code to be escaped, so my comment flow may not make sense to some users.

Dave,

Evaluating the HTML source for that page, a little gem pops out:

Please enter some search terms.

That led me to search for one of the keywords in the FORM source called 'navquery_searchbox' in Google. I stumbled very quickly on: http://blog.lbi-netrank.co.uk/google-testing-site-search-boxes-within-serps/ which describes the feature that Google offers (with screenshots too). At the bottom of that page it says:

UPDATE: Google have announced that the Google SiteLinks search box is now fully rolled out and that the selection of sites which feature this is algorithmically deduced from implicit user behaviour data.

This led me to http://blog.lbi-netrank.co.uk/google-sitelinks-search-boxes/ although you could just search for 'Google SiteLinks search box' in Google now I suppose!

So, Google SiteLinks now allow you to put a search box in the SERP.

More information from Google about this at http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/search-within-site-tale-of.html

I have seen this pop up recently for multiple sites. Google offers sites the ability to use the Google search engine to power a site's search feature. We looked at this feature for Fake Science. I bet what happens is those that use Google to power their site search gets this feature when you search for their site name.

Another nifty trick is the site: keyword. If you want to just search wikipedia from your browser's Google search window try typing:

site:wikipedia little endian
